THE BRIEF

Using the Internet, the library and other research sources, students retrieve, select and interpret information about life in 1909.

Using this research students create a two-page (four sides) Otago Former Times (OFT) newspaper, based on real events and present it, with a masthead, headlines and illustrations, in the language and design style of the time. The date can be any within the six-weeks the project runs.

Students may select any topics such as editorials, news reports, feature stories, advertisements of the era, entertainment notices, job vacancies and beauty tips. Each newspaper must include an article about one of the following:

The rapid aviation advancement of the time
The building of Fletcher House in Broad Bay
A poem in the style of Charles Brasch
A fancier's column

Good quality examples of the Otago Former Times will be hosted on this site.

The trophy winning year 9 and 10 newspapers will be printed and displayed in the Skeggs Gallery in the Municipal Chambers Clock Tower Building, the Octagon, during the Dunedin Heritage Festival, March.
