Project241- Sanitation, Health and Hygiene Education in Papua New Guinea Schools

Project241 is one of several  water supply, sanitation and hygiene projects run by Water for SurvivalProject241is administered in partnership with ATprojects, a non-governmental organisation based in Papua New Guinea.

Within Project241there is a 'twinning scheme'. The aim of this scheme is to increase the understanding between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea school communities by twinning a New Zealand school with a school in the Eastern Highlands.

This is an opportunity for teachers and students in both countries to broaden their understanding of each other with the exchange of ideas and information through the use of email and the Internet. New Zealand teachers and students also have   access relevant science, social studies, health and physical education and technology curriculum resources on this site.

The New Zealand based charity, Water for Survival, is promoting the twinning scheme as part of their programme to improve children’s health, by funding the building of toilets in conjunction with a health and hygiene education programme in Eastern Highlands schools.  New Zealand school children by studying the health and hygiene problems in Papua New Guinea will also lean about keeping themselves healthy.

As part of this exchange it is hoped New Zealand schools will help raise money to assist children in their twinned school to fund the building of toilets and the production of a health and hygiene education package.

Project241 is a long term project which started in 2000. The aim is to help local teachers and students upgrade sanitation facilities in the 216 Community and Primary Schools of the Eastern Highlands.  The project also provides health education to improve both staff and students' understanding of the need for clean drinking water, good sanitation and personal hygiene.

The first step in Project241’s programme is the construction of a sample toilet at each of the schools. These will be built by the school's teachers and students. Also as part of the programme, health messages have been printed in  student's exercise books to provide a basis for daily instruction.
