Sniff, Swing and Swipe 3
Sniff, Swing and Swipe 3 was an on-line project run in 2004, based in the New Zealand Technology and Science Curricula and open to all school students. Auckland Zoo was joined by Wellington and Hamilton Zoos, and the National Aquarium of New Zealand, in offering this on-line project. The project connected students with zoo keepers in designing and making behavioural enrichment items for the kea, red panda, spider monkey and the hawksbill turtle. Zoo keepers and aquarists encourage their animals to display natural behaviours, to stay active and to remain mentally stimulated. As these animals have had the need to hunt and search out food reduced, it is very important that behavioural enrichment is used to keep animals sniffing, swinging and swiping in their zoo homes. |
