Expert feedback

Our school health club prepared some activities on school health and sanitation lead by their teacher Ms. Lucy Mbithi. They performed some very interesting dances, role plays, choral verses.

There were activities with children washing hands after going to the toilets such as washing hands before cooking.

The role play was of a child being taken to hospital by her a mother after falling sick because the family did not observe simple hygienic rules.

The students have put up the rules in all classrooms and on the school notice board. It was so lovely everybody laughed and they enjoyed themselves.

This is how we intend to harvest water by roof catchment. We do have a well in our school as you can see. A class seven pupil did the drawing after careful planning with the school health club.

Now that the dry season is over we intend to harvest enough water that can last us the whole of term one 2010. We talked to our pupils on the need to conserve water even in their own homes. Now that we have closed school for the December holidays, each class will have a leaking tin so that we can utilize the water in the best way possible without wastage.

This song was composed by teacher Lucy for PNG and New Zealand kids to see. Perhaps they can put their own tunes and sing the songs? The verse is in Swahili language which is widely spoken in East African countries. We hope you will enjoy them choral verse and hygiene song.

NAWA MIKONO YAKO

Nawa  mikono yako
Kila baada ya kwenda haja
Kushika pesa
Kusalimia mtu
Nawa mikoo yako

Nawa mikono yako
Kila baada ya
Kutoka safarini
Kupapasa paka
Kupapasa  mbwa
Nawa  mikono yako

Nawa mikono yako
Ili  uzuie magonjwa
Zuia kuhara
Zuia virusi
Nawa mikono yako

This is all very interesting, Role plays are a very effective way to get a message across to children.
Who does the role plays and how are they performed?
I ask, because while it is a learning experience for those who are watching, you also need people with experience to prresent the role plays who know what they are talking about.
For example, when I was in Uganda I saw some excellent groups who were especially trained to undertake role plays with community groups and schools.
