HOW CAN YOU HELP?

ContextPNG map

The water and sanitation situation in Eastern highland schools is made difficult by:

    • Water only being able to be collected from metal (ie not thatched) roofs
    • Few water tanks which often only provide half a litre of water per student per day
    • River water being contaminated and located a long way from the school
    • Few, if any hand washing facilities
    • Few or no toilets
    • Not enough school fees collected to build toilets
    • Little government assistance
    • A lack of health education materials in the schools

Unfortunately, the high incidence of typhoid and other diseases are a result.

Solutions

Using this information you are asked to design and make a prototype of a method of washing hands that requires very little water and should be:

  • Produced from recycled materials
  • Accompanied by health education materials

Evaluation

Solutions will be evaluated by members of Oxfam's Water for Survival Programme who will provide feedback on their effectiveness,  durability, user-friendliness and health materials communication.

At the completion of the project students will have gained an insight into their own water and sanitation practices as well as issues affecting their peers in Papua New Guinea.

This insight will provide them with a broader understanding of water poverty and encourage them to be more responsible global citizens by being careful water consumers and active participants in the alleviation of poverty.Ombarda school
