WEEKS 2 AND 3
Research - Weeks 2 & 3, Monday 19 October
To design a hand washing prototype students need to research their own hygiene and sanitation practices, the importance of hand-washing, the situation and barriers to hand-washing in Papua New Guinea, and possible solutions to these barriers. Classes research:
- Sanitation and health education in your own school
- The similarities and differences between their schools and schools in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea
- The importance of clean water
- Examine their own hand washing habits
- Investigate the various types of communicable disease that can be spread through the hands
- How swine flu is caught
- Exactly what hand-cleaning is required to prevent disease
- Whether all hand-cleaning methods require water
- What type of mechanism could dispense a small amount of water at a time to wash hands and not be contaminated by users
- How you would persuade other students about the importance of keeping hands clean?
